Child Obesity: Why Is It Happening?

One of the best ways to combat Child Obesity is to understand why it is happening. The causes for Child Obesity can range from laziness to genetic disorders, but without understanding these fully it is all too easy to blame something and or someone else for the current situation of our children.
In my honest opinion one of the biggest factors weighing in on the current Child Obesity level of our world is the concept of time, and how that time is managed. I also believe that for some, a part of this is laziness. In a world that has seen vast development of technology, we are presented with the concept that our youth have a high level of demand. This basically meaning that when they want something, they want it right away, regardless of the implications.
This is no doubt noticeable through many factors of daily life such as food, technology and relationships. Food as become a high demand item, and we expect it to arrive within minutes of ordering, thus the advancement of Fast Food chains which turn over food at a ridiculously rapid rate to "please their customer" and in turn make a hefty profit.
Technology has advanced to the point in which we can download movies, games, music at the click of a button and it is instantly on our desktop ready to play. I recall not that long ago my parents were scared of the thought of such technology, yet in a few short years they are now as dependent on the internet as every other citizen in our country. As for children and technology, my two-year-old daughter already knows how to operate my iPhone.
Relationships come and go, and these days if someone isn't "happy" they are more than willing to leave and find something new. Gone are the days of "Normality" in which a couple work hard at their marriage and divorce was unheard of. Nowadays you can leave your spouse and take their belongings with you.
So you may think that I've gone a little off topic with all of this, but here is how I believe this all ties together. If you add the media and peer pressure into this equation, both things that we are faced with multiple times in a day, we are constantly bombarded with images concepts and ideals promoting "the next best thing".
For a young child to see this day after day, and process this in their minds, it is no wonder we are faced with the challenges that we have in front of us as an ever-increasing obese society. As parents we can provide a positive influence on our children and overcome this issue, we just need to be aware that it does in fact take time.
Work and Time Constraints
As a single parent of a two year old I am all too familiar with how sparse time can be. Depending on your child's age there can be a number of variables that affect a daily routine, from educational commitments to sporting commitments, long hours at work, family events, illness and so on. In an era of such fast paced lifestyles it is hard to find a spare ten minutes for ourselves that alone to eat healthy, exercise, and promote this lifestyle to our children.
As parents, we have been given an opportunity to provide a quality life for our children yet this is something which we can lose track of quite easily. No doubt we all love our children, that is unquestionable, but sometimes we forget the bigger picture and our routine can be burdened by an unhealthy nutritional intake and lack of physical activity.
The reality is that our children's early years are something which we will never get back if we miss them, and it is surprising how 10 minutes here or there can amount to a lot of input and influence on their lifestyle.
It really is all too easy to sit either ourselves or our children in front of the television and countless hours will pass, but just a few minutes of that time outside in the park, walking the dog or teaching them how to cook can promote so many positive ideas in their minds about active healthy lifestyles.
Fast Food and Processed Food
This is something that goes hand in hand with work and time constraints and is a massive influence on our children's development in regards to active and healthy decisions. Unfortunately there are just some days that we are unable to cook a healthy home cooked meal for our children, and the easiest option is to stop by the many fast food drive throughs on the way to netball, football or soccer practice. What we are failing to realise though is the counter productivity of such an act, and how it is actually having a negative affect on our children's development.
The common misconception is "my son/daughter is young and about to engage in their favourite sport, they will run off what they just ate". No doubt when we look at the mathematical side of obesity this is true, if you expel more energy then you consume you should not increase in weight. Yet what is not being taken into account is the large amount of additives, chemicals and saturated fat that is included with these fast food meals.
Our bodies are not created to digest such heavy substances, and the copious amounts of saturated fat contained in these meals is enough to do life long permanent damage if we continue to make this a regular habit.
Not only are we promoting that this type of food is okay, we are also promoting the idea that we can eat what we want as long as engage in some sort of physical activity.
The truth is that we need a well-balanced nutritional intake, consisting of a variation of proteins, carbohydrates and fats as well as nutrients and vitamins that our body depends on. This helps our body to disperse of its impurities and will lead to an overall positive physical wellbeing.
