How to play golf

By Jake Smith

Becoming a golfer can seem like a daunting step to take, especially since there seems to be numerous rules and techniques that come with this sport. The truth is, even if there is a lot to learn about golf, this sport is very rewarding once you start learning the basics of the game. Developing your fundamental skills and techniques does take a good deal of practice and determination. Thankfully, the guide below can make your learning journey a successful one.

Golf Clubs

There are a lot of different golf clubs out there and you may be confused on which ones you should buy. As a beginner you dont need anything fancy. Just get something simple. Don't get too caught up in choosing your golf clubs.

The most important golf clubs you can have are the putter, sand wedge and driver. You will also want 2 or 3 irons. You may have a maximum of 14 clubs in your bag while on the golf course. However you wont need that many as a beginner.

The easiest clubs for you to use will probably be the ones with the most loft or angle like the 9 iron. These clubs allow you to get the ball in the air and your accuracy is usually better than when using a club with less loft such as a 3 iron. Find the clubs that suit you best. Before buying your own set of clubs it may be a good idea to try out different golf clubs and play a few rounds before deciding which you like best. This could save you the hassle of buying clubs that you later don't like.

Golf Balls

If you tend to lose a good deal of balls each round, then it is probably better to buy cheaper golf balls ( Around 20$ a dozen). Once you become more experienced in golf, you will lose less balls and probably will be able to afford to buy more expensive balls. Also, if you are trying to decide what brand to buy, always test the ball out. Try using different brand names. This will help you find the brand that you will want to constantly use.

Learning How to Become a Golfer

The rules are not too complicated. We will take you though the most common ones. Here is a quick rundown of what you need to know.

Out of Bounds or Ball Lost

The boundaries of the course can often be found on the score card. If your ball is lost, then you must play another golf ball from the spot where your last play was.You are only allowed five minutes to search for a ball.If a ball is unplayable or out of bounds, then you must play your golf ball from where you last shot.
